Installing DotNetNuke in your production environment
Duration: 45 min |
Location: 8th Floor - Room 801
This session is all about installing DotNetNuke. Most installation documentation assume that you will be installing on your development machine, and even the default settings of DotNetNuke are not optimized for production use. During this session we will go through all the pit falls, from connecting to SQL server, to proper permissions across the board, to performance and security optimized settings. If you ever had to figure out how to best secure DotNetNuke this session is for you.
During this session we will solely use DotNetNuke Community Edition, which means that topics as setting up a webfarm and page caching will not be dealt with.

Building Single Page Applications with DotNetNuke
Duration: 45 min |
Location: 2nd Floor - Large Auditorium

A major shift is taking place in the web development world. More and more web applications are being built as “Single Page Applications”. This development model focuses on using JavaScript frameworks, AJAX and web services to build highly interactive web applications which don’t rely on the traditional postback model associated with WebForms development. Even Microsoft is joining the party by including a SPA project template in MVC 4. In this session I’ll go over some of the tools we use in DotNetNuke 6.2 to enable you to develop your modules using this approach and we’ll look at where this development model is appropriate and where the traditional postback model is more applicable. To wrap up the session I’ll build a simple module which demonstrates how you can use this new development approach when building your next module.

Mobile devices: from the 50K foot view to the execution
Duration: 45 min |
Location: 8th Floor - Room 806
Just a few years ago, people turned to their phones for basic communications: placing calls, checking email and sending texts. Today we live in a world where mobile phones are no longer just phones. Your phone is a piece of you. It has your personal information, your location, your friends, your pictures, your notes, the things that you like and the ones that you don’t.
You’ve probably heard people say that mobile devices are going to change our lives. Actually, they already have, but they will continue to gain more and more importance in our everyday lives for many years to come.
Doesn’t this sound like we’re right in front of a massive tsunami (a wave would be an understatement)?
Learning Objectives:
- Learn the elements of a strategy: the 50K foot view, the 20K foot view and the 0 foot view
- Learn the key features of a smartphone and what opportunities they bring.
- Review some examples of how some organizations world-wide have successfully implemented a mobile strategy.

Why Should Content Come First? - (content strategy and a "mobile first" approach to design)
Duration: 45 min |
Location: 8th Floor - Room 806

People visit your site for the content, they want to hear your message. We design to best show off your ideas. Content is the heart of that design. Colors, shapes, emotion; all these things are there to serve your message, or your content. As a designer, you need to have a clear understanding of where you are heading before you depart; i.e. know your content before you design, so that you can design to your content. We'll cover what it means to have a content strategy, why you need content before you design, and how to build better design working with the heart of your brand and message. This strategy is critical to your implementations,
whether it's a new site, a mobile re-design, or an implementation that covers multiple devices and media types.

This session is for the individual who feels compelled to preach the good news of DotNetNuke. It seems a lot of technical people like to call themselves evangelists today. Sit in on this session and meet called and formally trained evangelist Gifford Watkins, BSC, MA, MDIV. With the advent of DNN 6.2, this session will address the social and ethical issues arising from popularizing the most successful .NET framework to date. TV evangelists are infamous for manipulation, bilking the masses, offering false promises and more recently sexual scandals… so how will you avoid these pitfalls and upon which principles will you build your social platform? How will you maintain your following? How will you saturate your local market while building an international reputation? How will you avoid disgrace and how will you earn and maintain the respect of your peers, your clients, and your flock while financially sustaining your family?

It’s a Knockout !! - MVVM Module Development in DNN 6.2
Duration: 45 min |
Location: 2nd Floor - Small Auditorium
Client-side development using javascript libraries like jQuery, jQuery UI and kendoUI are all the rage in this Web 2.0 world. However, these excellent libraries require developers to directly manipulate the browser's DOM using css Selectors.
This approach requires developers to work closely with designers and does not really support the principle of "Separation of Concerns" which is well established for server-side frameworks.
On the other hand, the Model-View-ViewModel pattern is well-established in Silverlight (including Windows Phone) and WPF UI development, and is an excellent pattern for clearly separating the design (View) and functionality (ViewModel), and this pattern is now available for javascript developers. The KnockoutJS library which is being promoted by Microsoft as part of their new "Single-Page-Application" web application template, is one of these javascript implementations of the MVVM pattern.
In this session, Charles Nurse, Senior Architect for DotNetNuke Corporation will show how KnockoutJS in conjunction with the new Services Framework is used in DNN 6.2 to develop interactive client-side focused modules, and can be used by Module Developers to build their own client-side focused modules.

SQL Tips and Tricks for DotNetNuke Site Administration
Duration: 45 min |
Location: 8th Floor - Room 801
Some of the standard questions about a DotNetNuke site are often answered with a T-SQL Query: Why is my database so big? What table is the largest? How do you get a list of user’s properties? How many visitors came to my site yesterday? Wondered how to use the Host SQL Module to look into the database?
This presentation will focus on the various T-SQL commands that can help improve the day-to-day functionality of a DotNetNuke site. Using standard and free modules, the session will demonstrate helpful T-SQL queries that will answer common operational questions.
Updating your site and wanting to determine what 3rd party modules are located on what pages? This session will help you develop reports to ensure your upgrades deliver few surprises.
The presentation will also help the attendees understand some of the standard data relationships in a DotNetNuke database so that they can use the tools and techniques discussed to develop T-SQL queries of their own.
The presentation will focus on the current DotNetNuke database structures including the audit fields and taxonomy tables and the recent change related to Version 6. However, the majority of the techniques demonstrated can be used on previous versions of DotNetNuke.

DotNetNuke and the World of Manufacturing
Duration: 45 min |
Location: 8th Floor - Room 802
While not the traditional realm of DotNetNuke, the world of Manufacturing has a very real need for live, up-to-date information to ensure the daily production goals and targets are met. DotNetNuke provides a perfect platform for presenting and interacting with the plant floor. With the recent enhancements within DotNetNuke Version 6 and especially Version 6.2, DotNetNuke has positioned itself to support the newest plant floor needs.
The new social features of DotNetNuke provide the ability to ensure up-to-date information is placed into the hands of the decision makers, production leaders, and the plant support staff. For example, the new journal feature provides a real-time interaction amongst the various plant personnel with immediate updates, but also provides a historical view of the day’s events.
Truly a different social world, but from DotNetNuke’s point of view, this world is well within the capability and features available. This presentation will look at the different techniques for positioning DotNetNuke to support the Manufacturing world including how to support latest plant floor management tools - such as tablets, touch screen, and smart handheld devices.
The presentation will review methods to provide dashboard displays that provide a summary review of critical information. Additional, the presentation will show how to implement exception reporting to ensure operational processes are within control. DotNetNuke provides various methods to implement such display and reports.

Optimizing for Speed: Advanced JavaScript/CSS Management in DotNetNuke
Duration: 45 min |
Location: 8th Floor - Room 804
The topic of client side performance revolves heavily around reducing and optimizing the payload that is sent down from the server to the browser. Making websites faster is obviously something that a lot of us in the web world feel passionately about, and recently there have been some very exciting enhancements made to the DotNetNuke framework in the area of client side performance.
This session will introduce the open-source project Client Dependency Framework (CDF), and the new DNN API (Client Resource Management) based on the project that allow for dynamic JavaScript/CSS combining, minification, caching, and versioning. First introduced in DNN 6.1, this session will discuss the foundational features and also introduce the enhancements made in DNN 6.2.
Please note: this session is intended for a technical audience with a basic understanding of DotNetNuke’s architecture.
